Mastercard and Maestro: the Debit-Card Reality in Bulgaria
Most cards in Bulgarian wallets are debit rather than credit, and a large share of them carry the Maestro mark. That single fact explains nearly everything that distinguishes a Mastercard payment from a Visa payment at a casino cashier — not the scheme rules, which are close to identical, but the product a bank actually issued to the customer.
alphawin.biz is an independent information portal describing published conditions. It processes nothing and stores no card data.
Where it behaves exactly like Visa
The floors are the same: 20 лв. to deposit, 40 лв. to withdraw. Deposits are immediate. Payouts take one to three business days after the operator’s own review, which normally completes within about 24 hours. Strong authentication applies, the cardholder must be the account holder, and the closed-loop rule sends money back to the card that sent it. All of that is covered in the same terms on the Visa page, and nothing about the Mastercard network changes it.
Where the debit product changes things
- Maestro cards, especially older ones, are frequently accepted for deposits but cannot receive payouts. The return leg then has to be nominated on another instrument in the same name.
- A debit card is bounded by the balance in the account, so a deposit fails for lack of funds rather than for any reason connected to the operator.
- Daily internet-payment limits set inside the banking app apply on top of the cashier limits, and are the most common invisible cause of a refused payment.
- Some banks disable online use on a card entirely until the customer switches it on, which produces a decline that looks identical to a merchant block.
The order to check when a payment fails is therefore: available balance, then the bank’s own daily online limit, then whether the card is enabled for internet payments, then whether the issuer permits gambling merchant categories. Only after all four does the question become one for the operator’s support channels.
Merchant blocks and the local alternatives
Where an issuer refuses gambling merchant categories outright, no amount of retrying helps. The routes that bypass the card network are the domestic ones: ePay.bg through internet banking, EasyPay in cash at a counter, or Trustly authorising directly inside the bank. For a reader who would rather keep a gambling account off a bank card altogether, EasyPay is the only option that handles both directions in cash, and it is described on the payments desk.
Currency and the conversion margin
Bulgaria joined the euro area in 2026, so a cashier may show amounts in euro at the fixed rate of 1.95583 лв. to the euro. If the card is denominated in one currency and the gaming account in another, every transaction carries a conversion, and on a debit card used frequently for small amounts that margin is the largest recurring cost involved. Matching the two currencies when the account is opened is the fix, and it cannot easily be applied later.
Verification, and why it comes first
Identity and address documents are reviewed in roughly 24 to 72 hours, and the name on them must match the name on the card. Completing this on the day the account is created removes the delay from the first payout entirely. It also surfaces a Maestro payout restriction early, while there is time to arrange an alternative, rather than at the moment money is waiting to leave.
